MUSINGS FROM THE BENCH
Welcome back to the rink! As we begin the new season, we wanted to wish all of our readers good luck! We hope that everyone had a restful summer break and fit in a bit of coach development as well.
A number of our readers attended the NHLCA Coaching conference in Toronto and/or The Coaches Site conference at the University of Michigan.
2025/26 Season Update
Rachel will be entering her third season as an assistant coach with the Toronto Sceptres of the PWHL, while Jeff has taken a new position as head coach of the Basingstoke Bison of the NIHL in the UK. Lots of excitement in our household with the kids back at school and winter sports back in full swing!
Some of you are already competing in regular season, while others are entering the pre season portion of your schedule. Lots of planning to do. Remember to plan well and be patient as your team learns and improves.
We have included a couple drills that focus on puck touches, passing and shooting.
Drill #1
Bulldog 1v0 - 2v0
Opposite sides go together
F1 starts with puck, passes to F2 in opposite line
F2 pops out into dot line, F1 skates underneath
F2 makes lateral pass in NZ to F1 on the wall
F2 then curls back, picking up speed in crossovers before starting the drill from the line they started in
PART 2 - F2 joins the rush for 2v0. No Curlback.

Drill #2
4-Corner Blue Puck Exchange Warm up
X1 skates backwards with puck and exchanges with X2
X1 then exchanges with opposite X1 (lead pass into space)
X1 then passes to X2 and turns across blue to receive return pass from X2
