MUSINGS FROM THE BENCH

This week we have a set of defensive zone face off plays.

When running DZ Face Off Plays its important to recognize the OZ Face Off Loss forecheck of the opposition.

Are they running a 2-1-2 forecheck where both wingers attack? Is the opponents net front winger attacking to the strong or the weak side of the net? Is the centre attacking off the lost face off? Where are the opportunities strongest for a clean exit?

It is good to have two, three or more options for your team to use on a DZ Face Off Win. These can be run in practice so the players are confident in the routes and options.

Naming each face off can help for information retention. The coach can name them or the coach can work with the players to name them. This can make it easier for the players to remember the different routes.

Finally, it is the centre’s job to make sure that all of the players on the ice are aware of the defensive face off that will be used. Depending on the age of the players, either the coach can dictate which face off to use, or at older ages, the players can choose the face off.
