MUSINGS FROM THE BENCH
The Ice Hockey Coach Newsletter is proud to continue our partnership with NacSport Video Analysis Software! NacSport is a cost-effective way for coaches at all levels to mark, analyze, and present video to their teams.
Rachel and I have both used NacSport, and it has been a great tool for analyzing and presenting focused video in both individual and group settings.
NacSport can be used on both Mac (I am a Mac user) and Windows, and its clea,r straightforward design makes it easy for coaches to mark and build video presentations with information that matters most to them.
Using video to teach skills, systems, and X’s and O’s can be one of the most impactful tools that a coach has in their toolbox. When used correctly, video can build confidence in an athlete and drill down on team success and areas of improvement.
How Much Video is Enough?
Coaches have many different beliefs around how much video to show and when to show it.
It's important to understand the pedagogy around how people learn, the attention spans of your athletes, and the optimal amount of time of instruction that allows people to take in and remember information.
What is Learning Retention?
Learning retention refers to the ability of individuals to retain and remember information, knowledge, and skills they have acquired through the learning process.
Various factors contribute to learning retention, including the use of effective instructional techniques, active engagement in the learning process, reinforcement and practice, and creating connections and relevance to real-world applications.

Principles of Learning Retention:
1. Active engagement - Questions and discussion.
2. Relevance and meaning - Connected to practice and game situations.
3. Repetition and practice
4. Chunking - Using small amounts of information in short periods of time.
5. Retrieval practice
6. Spaced repetition - Refreshing instruction and learning points.
7. Visual aids and multi-modal learning
It is important to note that the effectiveness of these principles may vary among individuals and learning contexts.
Therefore, it is beneficial to consider individual learning preferences and adapt instructional strategies accordingly.
