Two Drills for Defense Puck Retrieval Situations

MUSINGS FROM THE BENCH

This week we have a set of defense retrieval drills. The first drill focuses on retrieving pucks of the back wall and then making a play.

The second drill focuses on chasing an opponent to the back wall and creating a optimal situation to steal the puck.

Drill #1

3 Puck D Retrieval

  1. 3 Different Sets - Go 2 times in a row, switch sides each time, regap up each time then switch with next defenseman - Make pass then you become the winger/center - Always regap up

  2. Backskate, pivot get puck bump to the near post for WSD to pick up puck and pass to a player on the wall

  3. Backskate, pivot get puck bump to the near post for WSD to the center off the post

  4. Backskate, pivot get puck, quick up to the strong side player 

Drill #2

Attack Hips & Stick Lift

  1. Players work on manipulating body position by attacking the hip area of opposing player.

  2. Attacking the hips of your opponent helps to counter any size and strength advantage opponent might hold over you.

  3. Utilizing this tactic in static 1 on 1 situations such as board or net front battles can give the defensive player several advantages;

  4. Turning the opponent thus allowing you to attack the players stick and puck without fighting through body position.

  5. Often times destabilizes and surprises puck carrier.

  6.  Results in far less penalties against as opposed to over aggressive stick or physical play against body.

  7.  During net front battles can be used to open up shooting lane so goalie can better track and evaluate incoming shot.

  8. Set up drill is various circles, near boards or net front 

  9. Have each D repeat 3 times before switching
