MUSINGS FROM THE BENCH

Welcome back to the grind of the season! We hope that you had a bit of downtime over the holiday season.

This week, we have a set of skill development drills. One for defense and one for forwards.

Forward Drill #1

2 vs 0 Entry Shot Wall Rim BGL

  1. F1 makes pass to F2 on entry who returns to F1 on slip pass (change entry tactic as needed)

  2. F1 stop at net on shot

  3. Coach in corner then rims puck to weak side wall for F2 retrieval

  4. F2 picks up puck off of the wall while protecting from coach pressure and gets off the wall

  5. F2 now cycles puck back down the wall where F1 releases and picks up the rim

  6. F1 gets off the wall while F2 cycles into soft spot and gets return pass from F1 for quick shot

  7. * Alternative sequence: F1 moves puck to weakside coach for pass to F2, where F2 would have to adjust their angle and positioning

Defense Drill #1

4 Puck Pass - D Retrieval

  1. Coach to D1, skate backwards stop and pass back to Coach skating forward (Black)

  2. D1 gets up to D2 and receives pass, he then skates in a semi circle and passes to D3 (Red)

  3. D1 does the same thing with D3 as with D2

  4. Coach dumps puck into corner and D1 has to retrieve it and go around the net and pass to D5 (or can do a quick stop behind the net and pass back to D4)

  5. Coach dumps puck into other corner, D1 then does the same thing with D5 as he did with D4

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“It’s not who’s put up the fastest time in the world that year, or who’s put up the fastest time in the previous four years, but who can get their hand on the wall first today.”
