MUSINGS FROM THE BENCH

DZ Exits - Chip and Run

This week we look at another DZ Exit situation.

Under pressure, it is sometimes the best course of action to chip the puck out of the zone and support the chip with a player coming underneath the puck “Low and Slow” and adding a “Slash player out of the zone.

Low and Slow

There must always be players underneath the puck in the DZ. This supports flat passes on exit and defends against  a turn over on a failed exit.

Slash Player

The slash player is the F2 coming from the slot area in the DZ. This player slashes towards the strong side through the NZ dot area, help ing to push the offensive D off the blueline.

Putting it All Together

This positioning allows for a double chip off the wall in the DZ and through the neutral zone.

The defensive player on the boards (F3) can chip past a pinching D so that the low and slow player can pick up the chip. This player can then chip again to a space where the slash player can pick up the puck.

Drill # 1

This drill provides a structure that promotes positioning and chip reads on DZ Exits.

Bison Three Man Exit - Chip and Run

  1. D back tracks to corner to pick up a puck placed by the C.

  2. D wheels net and passes to F1 on boards.

  3. F1 skates to boards to receive pass from D.

  4. F2 skates "Low and Slow" and receives chip from F1.

  5. F3 gets to slot area and then "Slashes" out of the zone to receive chip from F2.

  6. F3 continues down ice and shoots.

  7. F1 and F2 follow play and receive pass from the C for a second shot with net front.

  8. D follows play between the dots and then goes to strongside boards.

  9. The F2 or F3 curls to corner and picks up a puck placed by coach and passes to D.

  10. F creates a flash screen while D walks the line and shoots.
